Lewis Ray Young, 59, was arrested Monday evening for the murder of Conrado Sarate, 79, in the 2100 block of Avenue P.
Police were called on September 6, 2016 to Sarate’s residence to check on his welfare. Police found Sarate lying on the floor next to a bed. He had bloody wounds on his body and head.
An arrest warrant said Young used loppers (large garden shears) to beat Sarate.
On March, 14 DNA tests from the loppers led police to Young. At first, he denied any involvement. Police confronted him with the DNA results.
“At that point, Lewis Young began providing additional information about this case,” the arrest warrant said. “Lewis Young stated he was highly intoxicated and had been smoking crack cocaine.”
The warrant said, “A Hispanic female … approached him and asked if he could help her get money that was owed to her.”
“Young agreed and the female drove him to a house,” the warrant said.
Young was allowed into the house and he confronted Sarate for the money. Sarate denied owing any money and told Young to leave, according to the warrant.
Sarate picked up an object and hit Young in the arm with it. Young was able to take the object from Sarate and hit him instead. Young continued to hit Sarate at least once even after Sarate fell to the floor.
Young told police that Sarate was still not standing but still moving on the floor when he left.
Young left without taking any money according to the arrest warrant. Young was held Tuesday in the Lubbock County Detention Center. Bond was recommended at $250,000.
Both the arrest warrant and a jail booking sheet said Young was homeless.
