According to the Riviera Maya News a Lubbock man drowned in Cancun over the weekend.
The Riviera Maya News reported, “According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office (Ministerio Público del Fuero Común), the man was identified as Christopher Shepherd, 36 of Lubbock, Texas.”
The news report confirmed social media messages that had been circulating in Lubbock on Sunday.
A friend of Shepherd’s posted on Facebook, saying, “Even during this hard time it’s comforting to know how many people loved Chris and cared for him. It truly makes me happy to see how much of an impact he had on all the lives he was a part of.”
The Riviera Maya reported that Red Flag Warnings had been posted along the beach, which in Cancun means there are dangerous ocean currents, high surf or both. Three men went into the water during the Red Flag Warning, and Shepherd was swept away by strong waves.
He was taken to a hospital but later pronounced dead.
The Riviera May also reported, “Shepherd was the third drowning death along Cancun beaches in one week.”
A GoFundMe account has been opened for the family to help cover the costs of moving Shepherd’s body. That page can be found by CLICKING HERE.
