Following the wave of four unrelated officer involved shootings on Sunday, police departments across the nation are offering their condolences. In St. Louis and outside of Kansas City, both suspects were killed and the officers are expected to survive. In San Antonio, detective Benjamin Marconi was killed while writing a traffic ticket.
Lubbock Police Assistant Chief, Neal Barron said the department’s honor guard officers are on standby to hear of the arrangements for Detective Marconi’s funeral. Barron said this is a time where the community needs to come together and keep a protective eye on law enforcement officers.
“It’s a tragedy and I want to express the department’s condolences to the family, both to the blue family and the officer’s family in San Antonio,” Barron said. “It’s always a hard hit for law enforcement because you can see that this might happen to me someday.. and it’s just a good reminder to be safe out there.”
The San Antonio Crime Stoppers initially offered $10,000 as a reward for turning in information for the suspect, and governor Greg Abbott added $15,000 to that this morning making it a cash reward of $25,000. The suspect believed to be responsible for the shooting is 31 year old, Otis Tyrone Mccane. He is currently in custody with San Antonio Police and is being charged with capital murder.
“I think it’s important for the community as a whole, not just The Governor, The President, or whoever,” Barron said. “It’s important for the community to be watchful, you know, keep your eye out for things that don’t look right and let us know.”
