A time to indulge in gifts for your loved ones, and take the holiday trip you have been waiting for. Everyone loves this time of year, but the Lubbock Police Department said it’s a time when a lot of homeowners are caught of guard. The department sees a spike in home burglaries during the winter months, and Tiffany Pelt with L-P-D said there’s a few simple things people can do to avoid becoming a target.
“A lot of people might want to put their Christmas tree near a window where people can see it outside,” Pelt said. “It’s beautiful, but we suggest not doing that, don’t put your gifts and trees in a place where people can see.”
If you plan on leaving your home for an extended period of time, the department also suggests that you have someone collect your mail so that it doesn’t pile up. Stay in contact with your neighbors about the status of your home, and most importantly don’t post that you are leaving on social media. Ken Nauman with Pinnacle Protection said they are seeing an increase in home security cameras.
“For protecting outside property, inside property, they can watch their children in the backyard,” Nauman said. “They can look at their front porch at packages being stolen during the holidays right now.”
