Thunderstorms with powerful wind and lightning caused thousands of dollars in damage to businesses on the South Plains.
“The dirt and dust is so strong that you can barely see the trailer,” said Charles Furr, owner of Lubbock Auto Auction.
Wind and dust launched a trailer into the air across the parking lot Thursday.
“We looked back at the security video, and it lasted about 30-45 seconds. It did some damage. A few door glasses and back glasses and some vehicles busted out,” Furr said.
Furr and his employees were not the only ones who saw damage.
A manager with the Park Meadows Villas on Weber Drive said two power poles crashed down on the property due to wind. She said one of the lines was live and fell into a building. No injuries were reported, and the building was evacuated by Lubbock Fire Rescue. A gazebo that was next to a play structure at the complex was brought down by the wind as well.
Traffic signals around town were affected by power outages, including the intersection of Texas and Broadway, as well as 34th Street and Avenue A.
Additionally, trailer overturned at 37th Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard Thursday afternoon.
Nearby, the sections of roof paneling just a few block away at Hart Moving and Storage, were blown off the top of the building.
“It was bad wind,” Furr said.
“We had employees still here out in the lot working and when it hit they got in. No injuries, nobody got hurt,” he explained.
Furr said the only thing he could do was clean up his property.
“We repair stuff that we have and get ready for (the auction) next Thursday,” Furr said.
