Chick-fil-A, Inc. has selected Lubbock resident Charis Hunt of South Plains College as a recipient of the chain’s $1,000 Leadership Scholarship.

Hunt was nominated by Brandon Mulkey, Operator of Chick-fil-A at the 82nd & Milwaukee Restaurant. Hunt has worked for Chick-fil-A for nearly five years. She is taking classes at South Plains College in hopes to become a dental hygienist.

“The program recognizes employees who demonstrate the leadership and character qualities to build a successful life, while offering tangible assistance to enrich their lives with education beyond high school,” said Brandon Mulkey. “Charis has the potential to accomplish great things.”

The Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship Program began in 1973 out of founder Truett Cathy’s desire to incent restaurant employees to further their education. Since the program’s inception, more than 30,000 team members have received scholarships, bringing the total amount to nearly $30 million.

In addition, local owner Brandon Mulkey has matched the scholarship and provided Hunt with an additional $1,000 to use toward her education. All recipients are also eligible for Chick-fil-A’s S. Truett Cathy Scholar Award, which provides an additional $1,000 scholarship to the top 25 Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship recipients each year.
