The local chapters of the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army were doing everything possible on Tuesday to help those affected by the devastating floods in the Houston area.
“The Lubbock canteen is one of the best in the state of Texas,” Salvation Army volunteer Rudy Zapata said.
The Salvation Army was packing up water and other supplies for the thousands of people impacted. They expected to leave for Houston Wednesday morning.
Three volunteers will be going, and they said they won’t know what they’ll be doing until they get there and asses the situation.
“Probably be serving the rescue crews, the first responders,” Zapata said.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross was also doing what it could. The senior disaster program manager was already deployed and several more volunteers were on standby.
“This one is pretty significant,” American Red Cross major gifts officer Jennifer Trengove said, “especially because those being impacted by this disaster have just recently been impacted by the storms and flooding that happened about a month ago.”
Trengove said the goal for the Red Cross is the provide immediate assistance and then help figure out a long-term plan for those affected.
She said community support during disasters like this is what makes the relief effort possible.
“We really need financial assistance,” Trengove said. “Donations are the best way to help us a lot of times people want to donate food or items but the best way to help is with money and then we can purchase the items that we need.”
