For people in Lubbock, their love affair with the Big Mac began in 1968 when McDonald’s built its first store at 50th Street and Avenue T. For only the second time since it opened, the restaurant will be closing to undergo a complete make over.

The restaurant will be completely torn down in order to make way for a new and improved McDonald’s. The new state-of-the-art building will have improved seating, better parking, better drive-thru access, and a more modern look and feel. It will also be very green and energy efficient as part of McDonald’s commitment to the environment.

Franchise Owner Hugo Vargas says he is excited for what the rebuilt restaurant will mean for the people of Lubbock. “McDonald’s has some of the best customers in the world, and we appreciate their loyalty, which is why we felt it was time for this rebuild. We want Lubbock to have the best restaurant experience possible, and our new restaurant will definitely meet that goal. This location is one of the busiest in town, and we know our customers will love our new modern design built with comfort and convenience in mind.”

The restaurant will officially close for business starting on Monday, May 16th, and will remain closed until Fall 2016. A grand opening celebration is being planned. Employees of the restaurant will be transferred to other locations during the remodel.

Vargas invites customers to visit one of his other seven locations in Lubbock during the rebuild: 19th Street and Avenue X, 50th Street and Interstate 27, 50th Street and Quaker Avenue, South Loop 289 and University Avenue, 61st Street and Slide Road, 82nd Street and Slide Road, and 98th Street and Quaker Avenue.
