On Monday, accident investigators continued looking into a deadly wreck that happened over the weekend. The Lubbock chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving said this type of wreck happens all too often in our area.
“Two out of three people will be affected in their lifetime, and that’s a lot of numbers, a lot of lives affected for something that’s completely preventable,” Victims Specialist Amanda Eldredge said.
Eldredge works with lots of victims following drunk driving incidents. She said statistics show that on average, a person will drive drunk 80 times before an arrest is ever made.
“It’s not going to pick and choose who it is going to hurt, it’s going to hurt everybody, and just because one life was lost doesn’t mean that all the lives involved aren’t affected.”
30-year-old Maggie Davidson was killed when LPD said Shani Nichols ran a red light and hit her car at the intersection of 34th and Indiana.
In a statement, her former workplace Red Raider Outfitters said, “We were very saddened to hear of Maggie Davidson’s passing. She was a talented artist that brought a unique aspect to Lubbock. Her love for the arts will live on in the city. The arts community will miss her greatly. Our hope is that friends of Maggie’s celebrate her life. Our thoughts are with her family today.”
Davidson’s boss at Elite Sign and Design said, “Out of respect for the family, her work family is praying the best for Maggie and her family, and we would love to celebrate her life and meaning at a later time.”
Eldredge is urging people to remember this tragedy, and to think twice before getting behind the wheel.
“It’s a bad choice to drink and drive, and that decision will not only affect you, but everyone else on the roads as well. I want to encourage individuals…there’s no need to drink and drive, you can utilize Uber or taxi services or a designated non-drinking driver.”
