Next week, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is scheduled to make major traffic changes along Phase 5B of the Marsha Sharp Freeway (MSF) project.
“The traffic switches and closures will impact several areas along the MSF (US 62/82) Phase 5B projects limits. Motorists should anticipate delays and are advised to seek alternate routes around the work zone,” said Will Barnett, P.E., TxDOT Lubbock Area engineer.
The traffic changes are scheduled to begin Wednesday, weather permitting, and continue into Thursday.
Wednesday—April 13
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Crews will close the westbound Spur 327 bridge at Milwaukee Avenue and detour traffic onto the frontage road. Westbound Spur 327 traffic wanting to continue toward Wolfforth will need to use Milwaukee Avenue to connect with MSF. That afternoon, crews will open the new westbound Spur 327 bridge, at the MSF interchange, and the Milwaukee Avenue on-ramp. Once the bridge is open to traffic, westbound traffic will exit the Spur to Milwaukee Avenue and pass through the intersection to continue westbound onto the new bridge. Westbound Spur 327 traffic will remain in this configuration for several months as crews work to tie the Spur mainlanes to the new bridge.
Wednesday—April 13
8 p.m. – 12 a.m.
Westbound MSF mainlanes and frontage road at Milwaukee Avenue will be closed to traffic to allow crews to move and reset barrier and make road striping changes. During this time frame, westbound freeway traffic will be detoured onto Milwaukee south to Spur 327 to use the new ramp and bridge to continue westbound. Westbound MSF freeway is anticipated to be restored to its normal traffic pattern by midnight.
Thursday—April 14th
12 a.m. – 4 a.m.
Crews will close the eastbound frontage road on-ramp from 82nd Street. The Alcove Avenue connector road will also be closed at this time. The eastbound MSF mainlanes will also be reduced to one-lane of traffic to allow crews to move and reset concrete barrier and complete roadway striping. Once the work is completed, eastbound MSF traffic will be switched onto the newly constructed frontage road. Alcove will be reopened as well. Traffic is anticipated to remain in this pattern for the next 12 months.
“These changes are going to the allow crews to begin work constructing the MSF mainlanes and the demolition of the existing westbound Spur 327 bridge over MSF. Motorists can expect additional road closures and detours in the coming weeks as construction progresses,” Barnett said.
