A man arrested by the Midland Police Department late last week in connection with several indecent exposure incidents involving school children is out of jail on bail.
Steven Chastain, 37, was arrested around noon Friday at his home. According to Midland Police, Chastain is accused of exposing himself to school children three separate times last week. The children were walking near Bonham Elementary, Henderson Elementary, and Midland High School.
Chastain was released on just a $500 bond. Many residents are concerned over the low bail amount and fear this encourages criminals to keep committing crimes.
Judge David Cobos, Midland County Magistrate, told YourBasin.com several factors go in to the amounts set for bail.
In Chastain’s case, he’s facing a Class B misdemeanor. Cobos said bail is set the same for all misdemeanors across the board.
“The county courts at law have set a preset amount of 500 dollars for those offenses,” Cobos said.
Cobos explains Chastian bailed out before seeing the magistrate a route many take avoiding higher bond.
“It actually happens frequently the only case it doesn’t happen is with family violence incidents,” Cobos said.
Midland Police now working to bring more charges against Chastain.
