A Taylor County Grand Jury indicted an Abilene man accused of killing six dogs in his neighborhood by using hot dogs filled with rat poison.

Ramon Rea, 63, was indicted on three counts of Cruelty to Animals related to incidents that happened in June of 2013, February of 2014, and June of 2014.

Court documents accuse Rea of throwing hot dogs laced with poison into his neighbors’ yards.

Kathy Burnitt said she found the hot dogs in her backyard after her dogs began to act strange.

“I found a Styrofoam cup one day,” Burnitt said, “with green mushy liquid and I thought it looked like antifreeze.”

Both of Burnitt’s dogs passed away, and her neighbor, Linda Chapman, lost her companion as well – a sight she will never forget.

“That was torture. His insides was coming out,” Chapman recalled with tears in her eyes.

Burnitt and Chapman say they have witnessed three other dogs in their neighborhood pass away in the same manner as their pets over the span of about a year.

The Abilene Police Department issued a warrant for Rea’s arrest in November of 2011.  He released from the Taylor County Jail at that time after posting bonds totaling $4,500.
