This morning, Saturday, June 25, 2016 at approximately 2:11 a.m., patrol officers responded to a report of a disturbance with an aggressive suspect threatening customers and staff members at Whataburger, 1702 19th Street. Officer Mitchell was the first officer to arrive. He located the suspect standing next to his vehicle arguing with a security guard. Officer Mitchell attempted to intervene, however the suspect remained argumentative and refused multiple commands from Officer Mitchell to keep his hands out of his pockets.

Officer Mitchell attempted to perform a pat down of the suspect for possible weapons and the suspect punched Officer Mitchell in the face with a closed fist. Officer Mitchell fought with the suspect until backup officers arrived to assist. The suspect continued to strike the officers with a closed fists and he kicked a third officer multiple times. Officers used a Taser, but it had no effect on the suspect. He was eventually arrested and transported to the Lubbock County Detention Facility and booked in.

Officer Mitchell was transported to UMC by EMS for his injuries. The two other officers were treated and released by EMS at the scene.
