A 27-year-old man is behind bars for aggravated sexual assault on a small child.
Chet Shelton of Gatesville was arrested on Sunday in connection to an incident that happened on Wednesday.
When emergency workers arrived at home on South 34th Street in Gatesville, they found an infant unresponsive and not breathing.
District Attorney Dustin Boyd said Shelton was taking care of the child that day while the child’s mother, who is also Shelton’s girlfriend, was at work.
The infant was pronounced dead at Coryell Memorial Hospital. The autopsy revealed that the infant died from blunt force trauma. It also revealed that the infant had been sexually assaulted.
Shelton’s bond has been set at $500,000.
Investigators are expecting additional charges.
Authorities expect an additional warrant will be issued by the Texas Parole Division as Shelton is currently on parole for Injury to a Child.
