The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office said one person died in a fire early Friday morning.  Someone, possibly a neighbor, called 911 just after 3:00 am to report a fire in the 9500 block of County Road 2500.  That location is near 98th Street and MLK. 

A name was not yet released but the sheriff’s office indicated it was an elderly man who lived in the home.  The sheriff’s office was treating the situation as an accidental fire.  The state fire marshal’s office was called to assist in the investigation. 

The sheriff’s office provided the following update late Friday morning:

The Lubbock Sheriff’s Office, with the aid of the State Fire Marshall’s Office, is currently investigating the residential fire that claimed the life of an elderly man early Friday morning. The fire was reported by neighbors to be at a residence located at 9516 cr 2500, at around 0314 hrs, and was fully engulfed when Deputies arrived a short time later. Fire Departments from Woodrow and Slaton extinguished the fire to discover the decedent inside. The remains are believed to be those of the 74 year old occupant however, further release of the victim’s identity will not occur  until positive ID can be determined by the Lubbock County Medical Examiner’s Office later this week. The fire is believed to have started accidentally and no foul play is suspected at this time.
