A 47-year-old man died while in custody Tuesday, prompting an investigation by the Texas Rangers.
Officials with the Ector County Sheriff’s Office say they responded to the 17000 block of Gonzales Avenue in Gardendale Tuesday afternoon about stolen property and environmental violations.
While at the scene, investigators detained David Maestas and put him in the back of an ECSO patrol car as the investigation was done, according to a release.
Investigators say they reportedly found Maestas unresponsive some time later.
He was transported to Medical Center Hospital via ambulance and later pronounced dead by medical personnel, officials say.
His body has been sent to Tarrant County for an autopsy and the Texas Rangers are now investigating the death.
