Pete Ramos, 34, faced a Lubbock County judge to enter a plea deal on Tuesday, related to the death of his younger brother, Bobby, 20.
Ramos, who was 33 at the time of his arrest, pleaded guilty to Aggravated Assault with Serious Bodily Injury. He was sentenced to seven years in prison, including jail credit, which began September 28, 2015.
He faced a murder charge after his brother died, but that charge was expected to be dropped in exchange for the guilty plea on the lesser charge.
Police said Pete beat Bobby with a baseball bat, and stabbed him, on September 28, 2015. Bobby later died at the hospital.
Family members blamed the incident on Pete’s drug abuse, saying that he was “not in his right state of mind.”
A family member said the sentencing came as a surprise, saying that relatives were unaware of the court appearance until afterwards.
Aggravated Assault with Serious Bodily Injury is a second degree felony.
