EL PASO, TX — The El Paso Police Department reports a man was killed Saturday morning after being electrocuted at the site of the former ASARCO Smelting Plant.
The victim has been identified as Raymundo Martinez, 52.
According to investigators, Martinez and another man were trying to steal copper wire from an electrical building on the former plant site.
El Paso Police told ElPasoProud.com the man was reaching between live wires when at some point he came into contact with them and was electrocuted. Martinez died at the scene.
Investigators say the two men had been stealing wire and other metals from the location over the past several months and would then sell the wire at a local recycling plant.
