Manchester by the Sea has received universal acclaim, and has Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Screenplay. It’s the story of a man who’s brother has given him sole guardianship of his nephew, and both of them struggle against their past and toward their future. The powerful drama is rated R and runs about an hour-and-a-half. See it at the Alamo Drafthouse or Premiere.
Another powerful drama is the August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winning work, Fences. Denzel Washington directs and stars with “How to Get away with Murder” actress Viola Davis. They revived the play on Broadway back in 2010, and each won Tonys. They very well could add an Oscar apiece. It’s the story of a garbage collector, a former baseball player, who tries to rear his son above him, despite the teenage angst.
It’s rated PG-13 and runs a little longer than a hour-and-a-half. Go back to the 50s and into the struggle at Premiere or Tinseltown.
