Learning about government can be a very abstract concept for young elementary students.
To learn about various city government positions, second and third grade teachers at Wester Elementary invited Mayor Dan Pope to visit their classes and put a face with the title of Mayor
“We’ve been leaning about taxes and where we get them from and, and where they give them to, and, and we’ve been learning about Presidents and, and Mayors and governments,” said RJ Smith, a second-grader at the elementary school.
“I asked him [Mayor Pope] if he could build more playgrounds for kids to play on like after a day of school or something. He said he would like to change like making… having, having more good jobs for young people when they get out of like college,” said Marianne Evans, a third-grader at Wester.
“We’re working as a community to try to get our companies that already here to continue to invest in our community as well as trying to be attractive to the other businesses,” said Mayor Pope. “It’s about making our community more attractive to Millenials and we want them to grow up here, be educated here and then make, choose to work and raise their families here.”
