We give thanks on Thanksgiving, go to the mall on Black Friday, and browse the web on Cyber Monday. Now, we have a day dedicated to giving back and making Lubbock a better place; Giving Tuesday. On Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at 10:00 a.m., at the United Supermarkets Store Support Center, a mayoral proclamation declaring November 29 Lubbock’s 2016 day of giving will be presented to 73 local nonprofits during a press conference and ribbon cutting ceremony.
Giving Tuesday (the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – this year on November 29), harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners—nonprofits, businesses, corporations and media as well as families and individuals—to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.
Lubbock-based nonprofit, Alström Angels, in partnership with the Community Foundation of West Texas, is coordinating the Giving Tuesday movement for the South Plains. “When I saw other cities around the world participate in Giving Tuesday, I knew we had to bring that spirit of giving to Lubbock and our surrounding communities,” said Cassie Johnston, Lubbock Giving Tuesday campaign director and executive director of Alström Angels. Johnston explained that the local movement, #GivingTuesdayLBK, inspires people to take collaborative action to improve our local community, give back to causes they celebrate, and help create a better world.
“The Community Foundation of West Texas believes that charitable giving should be easy, flexible and effective,” stated Michelle Tosi-Stephens, vice president for the Community Foundation of West Texas. Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for the community to come together and have more impact with those participating in the campaign. The Community Foundation of West Texas will also announce matching funds for participating nonprofits to further leverage community dollars raised for good.
Seventy-three local nonprofits have joined the 2016 #GivingTuesdayLBK campaign and have set a collective goal to raise $175,000 on November 29, 2016. “There is strength in numbers,” Johnston stated, “and when we work together, extraordinary things will happen.”
Mayor Pro Tem Latrelle Joy will present the 73 nonprofits with a proclamation declaring Giving Tuesday the official day of giving for the city of Lubbock on November 22. A press conference and ribbon cutting ceremony will follow her presentation. Interview opportunities with Joy, Alstrom Angels, The Community Foundation of West Texas and participating nonprofits will be available after the ceremony.
