LORAINE, TX — The National Weather Service in Midland confirmed Tuesday that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Loraine Monday morning.

Several homes and businesses in the town experienced heavy damage.

The roof off the Loraine Independent School District’s agriculture building was taken off curing the storm. Although FFA students used the building to care for their pigs, no animals were present when it collapsed.

The winds were so strong, steel posts were torn from their concrete emplacements, according to Loraine Superintendent Travis Edwards.

Class was in session when the storm hit. Staff members instructed students to shelter after spotting a funnel cloud, says Edwards.

Flying debris caused significant damage to a number of homes in the town as well.

No injuries have been reported.
