Prosecutors filed a motion Monday to permanently confiscate $8,265 from Christopher Perez, 29, of Lubbock.
Perez was arrested April 6 for possession of a controlled substance. Specifically, during a traffic stop at 34th Street and Avenue S., Lubbock County Sheriff’s Deputies found 1.8 pounds of marijuana, .06 grams of cocaine, 40 grams of methamphetamine, $8,000 of cash in Perez’ front pocket, more cash in the vehicle, sandwich bags, and two cell phones according to court records.
Officers also found a 5-year-old boy in the SUV Perez was driving.
Perez was a participant in a controlled drug purchase conducted by the sheriff’s department and agents with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency earlier that same day. He was pulled over for not using a turn signal within 100 feet of an intersection before turning.
Some of the money found with Perez was “LSO and DEA buy money from a previous controlled purchase.”
“Affiant contends that the $8,265.00 of United State currency … is proceeds derived from the illegal distribution of methamphetamine and marijuana in the Lubbock area.
A judge has not yet ruled on the status of the money. Perez was able to post bonds totaling $97,500 to get out of jail until his trial date.
Court records did not say if the boy was allowed to stay with Perez or if he was placed with CPS or another family member.
A message was placed with LSO to ask about the status of the boy.
