Parents and grandparents of students in the Mighty Lee Rebels Marching Band told yourbasin.com that the fight song “Dixie” is no more.

According to the parents, the students are not too happy.

“Yeah, I think he was a little upset,” said Shane Harris, a father of a Midland Lee band member, who recently moved to Midland.

“I think she’s upset about it, because it is their fight song,” said Pam Sanchez, a grandparent of one of the band members.

Dixie has been the fight song for the Robert E. Lee High School Rebels for nearly half a century.

The song originated even before the civil war. It eventually became an anthem for the Confederacy, and has associated with the South ever since.

“I don’t think you should erase history. If it’s something you particularly don’t like, you learn from it,” said Sanchez.

The removal of the fight song only adds to an ongoing controversy surrounding the name of Midland Lee. For the past few days a petition has been circulating the internet, urging the school district to change the name of the high school.
