An internal investigation is underway after a sergeant with the Midland Police Department was arrested Friday and accused of a family violence charge.

Sgt. Guadalupe Bretado, 43, was booked into the Midland County jail Friday on an assault (family violence) charge as well as interfering with an emergency call, according to a release from police officials.

Police were called to the 3700 block of North Edwards Street about a disturbance.

During the investigation police say they were led to believe that Bretado had assaulted his girlfriend and interfered with her attempt to call 9-1-1, according to a release from the MPD.

Bretado, according to police officials, has been employed with the MPD for more than 16 years and is assigned to the police division at the Midland International Air and Space Port.

MPD officials have declined to comment on the investigation.

He has since been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
