The Midland Police Department is alerting citizens of a skimming device that was located at a local convenience store.
On Friday, Feb. 5, MPD was notified of a skimming device found on a fuel pump at Kwik Check Convenience Store located at 2503 Rankin Hwy. A skimming device is a debit and credit card reader that illegally obtains the card holder’s information such as their name, the card number and their personal identification number. The suspects gained access inside the pump and attached the device to gather customers’ card information during a transaction. An examination of the skimming device determined the stolen card information could be sent to the suspect’s computer or other electronic device via bluetooth. It is unknown when the skimming device was placed on the pump.
Any individuals who used debit or credit cards to purchase fuel at this location in the last 30-45 days should cancel their cards to avoid accounts from being compromised. Citizens are encouraged to check the card entry locations on fuel pumps and ATMs before inserting a card. MPD also suggests for customers to run debit cards as credit to avoid compromising the personal identification number.
Citizens who believe their accounts have unauthorized transactions can contact MPD at 432-685-7108 to file a report. There are no suspects at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
