Police officers are heading to neighborhoods over the next few days as they’re bringing their mobile command center out to the public. They say it’s their way of talking with the public and getting community feedback.

“This is our time to just be out in the field and see what’s going on,” said Police Chief Greg Stevens. “We want people to know that we are here and want to help.”

The command center will be at the Briercroft Shopping Center at 5302 Avenue Q from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday. After hours, at least one or two officers will remain at the center.

Latosha Rotramel, who lives near the Briercroft Shopping Center, was just passing through when she saw the mobile command center in a parking lot. She stopped by, and she said she’s glad she did.

“Every concern, every question I had was answered,” said Rotramel. “I want to know how safe Lubbock is for me and my family, and this moment was really important to have.”

Stevens believes this on-the-road station is just one more way to fight crime in a growing city. Instead of heading to the police department, people can just walk out their doors and see police ready to help.

“We are trying to do more innovative work,” said Stevens. “We need to be proactive and get ahead of the problems happening here, so that people can remain safe.”

Stevens also says that this is the public’s chance to get to know police face-to-face and not in the back of one of their cars.

“When we meet people, it’s often not on the best of terms usually not their best day, but this way we are meeting people on their terms, in their best light,” said Stevens.

Police said other mobile command center deployments and locations may be announced throughout the year.
