Megan Benavidez said her little boy Logan, age 1, was stung by a Striped Bark Scorpion on his birthday.  She also said Midland Memorial Hospital denied him care on Thursday night.

MMH denies the allegation.  (See their full statement below.)

Benavidez, a mother of two, said she was completely frightened after her baby was stung by the venomous creature.

“I was literally scared for my son’s life,” Benavidez said. “My son was rejected medical care,” Benavidez said.

Megan said the nurses at Midland Memorial would not look at the sting or take Logan’s temperature.

“He was vomiting, had diarrhea, and he was in pain,” Benavidez said. “He was drooling, numb and couldn’t walk on his foot.”

Benavidez got help by calling poison control, and Logan is doing better.

Casie Graves, a healthcare worker and one of Benavidez’ close friends, witnessed the event.

“Compassion,” Graves said. “Anybody in the health care industry knows compassion is important.”

Midland Memorial issued the following statement:

Due to patient privacy rights, we cannot discuss the details of specific patient care; however, as a county hospital and in accordance with the law, Midland Memorial Hospital will never refuse treatment of someone presenting to our emergency department in need of emergency medical care. Furthermore, full examination and treatment is always required on any child under the age of nine.
