More Concerns Raised Over Annexation At City Council Meeting

More Lubbock County residents filled Lubbock City Hall Thursday night for a public meeting about a possible annexation in South Lubbock County.

Some residents who live in South Lubbock County are concerned as the city is looking to annex in a portion of land stretching from near University Avenue to near Milwaukee Avenue, south of FM 1585.

Thursday was the second public hearing on the topic. Many residents were at both meetings so they could enter into a discussion with the council, and not only share their concerns, but ask and answer questions as well.

“I’m feeling the sense that everybody in the room wants to come to a middle ground and try to get a solution that will accommodate the city’s future growth and yet take into consideration the rights of the property owners south of Lubbock,” Mayor Glen Robertson said Thursday.

At one point during the meeting, Robertson said the council has a few different options they take when it comes to a vote. Robertson said the council can annex all the proposed land into the city limits, decide to go back to annexing land into the city limits by request of the owner, or they may have another option.

Robertson said he spoke to the legal staff about another option. “State statute gives us the opportunity to annex this entire area with the exception of the people who are in opposition, we can give them a time frame, that you will not be annexed within this time frame,” Robertson said.

Robert Henry lives in the proposed annexed area and has been at both public hearings.

“I think they’re proceeding very well. I feel better now than coming into it. The city council, the mayor, they’re listening, they’re starting to provide options. They’re understanding the problems as the annexation was proposed,” Henry said.

The City Council will vote on the annexation at their meeting on April 14.
