81 teams from Texas and Oklahoma gathered in Lubbock this weekend for the 58th Annual Fibermax Caprock Classic.
According to Tournament Director Bobby Drum, the event started when Texas Tech basketball coach Polk Robinson asked the Caprock Ambucs chapter to start a tournament so local talent could be recruited by college scouts.
In the decades since, Drum said it has morphed into the largest high school basketball tournament in the world.
“I think because it is so big and we are the largest tournament in the country that brings in extra publicity,” Drum said. “Several coaches want to come out and they are from around this area and they can just walk in and see the kids play here without having to travel and see those guys.”
The three day tournament brings in coaches, players, parents and fans. All of those extra people helps to stimulate Lubbock’s economy-especially in local restaurants and hotels. It also brings in money for our American Business Club chapter. Drum said this tournament is one of their biggest fundraisers of the years.
“It helps fund all of our charitable organizations that we work for,” Drum said.
One of the most well known is AmTrykes, tricycles given to children and veterans with disabilities.
