On Sunday evening, Anita Licon’s car was hit in the side by another driver at Avenue Q and I-27. She said the driver who hit her took off immediately.
“I just felt my car spinning, it spun maybe like two times then it came to a halt,” said Licon. “I looked where the truck was and I was really praying to God that he would come to my aid, but they just took off. They took off on the Slaton exit road.”
Licon was taken to University Medical Center soon after the accident. Along with some bruising, Licon was left with a now unusable car and still no answers as police continue to investigate.
Now, not only is she left without a car to get around, but no insurance to cover the damage, something she didn’t think she needed until it was too late.
“Get full coverage. Spend a little bit more but in the end it’s worth it, because if I had I would have had my car already they would have done something for me.”
Lubbock Police said Licon’s story is all too familiar because hit and run crashes in Lubbock happen quite frequently.
“Unfortunately it happens far too often, often people not having their drivers licenses or insurance actually flee and then they end up making matters worse for everybody,” said Lt. Ray Mendoza with the Lubbock Police Department. “If we end up finding the suspect in this case they [the victim] can go after them civilly and file a lawsuit against the driver.”
If you are ever involved in a hit or run, or witness one, Lt. Mendoza advises trying to make a note of the vehicle’s make, model, color and license plate if at all possible.
The incident occurred near the 6100 block of I-27 Sunday around 7 p.m. The driver who hit Licon was driving a dark Escalade. If you think you may have any ideas or tips as to who the driver may be, you are encouraged to reach out to the Lubbock Police Crimeline at 806-741-1000.
