A multi-county, high-speed chase that turned into a standoff near Slaton ended late Saturday evening.
The suspect, identified as Harvey Leon Baxter, 26, of Wolfforth was taken into custody and transported to the Lubbock County Detention Center.
Baxter is charged with evading in a vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm, unauthorized use of a vehicle, resisting arrested, driving at a unsafe speed and having no driver’s license.
Lt. Bryan Witt, a DPS public information officer, told EverythingLubbock.com the incident began just before 9:00 p.m. near the Scurry and Nolan County line.
DPS troopers, based in Abilene, attempted to stop a truck, driven by Baxter, on U.S. Highway 84 for a traffic violation. The truck was reported stolen from Lubbock, according to Witt.
Baxter refused to stop and lead authorities on a high-speed chase across Scurry, Garza and part of Lubbock County.
Lubbock County authorities shut down U.S. Highway 84 near Slaton and advised drivers to take alternative routes.
Witt said the vehicle eventually stopped near Slaton.
It was at this point a standoff between Baxter and authorities began.
The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office SWAT and K-9 teams approached the vehicle just before 11:30 p.m. and took the suspect into custody, Witt said.
Numerous law enforcement agencies were involved in the chase and the standoff.
U.S. Highway 84 was opened back up to traffic following the incident.
