The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to a two-vehicle accident on July 9, 2015.
At approximately 11:00 p.m., DPS received information of a major crash on US 287 in Potter County about one mile east of Amarillo.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1988 Chevrolet Pickup driven by Carlos Maldonado, 56, of Amarillo was turning south onto US 287 from Parsley Road. Maldonado, who failed to yield the right of way, pulled out in front of a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Hugo Carillo Vaquera, 41, of Amarillo.
Vaquera, who was traveling southbound on US 287 and wearing a seatbelt, collided with the vehicle driven by Maldonado. Vaquera was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo in stable condition. Maldonado, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was also transported to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo where he died. Next of kin has been notified and the crash is still under investigation.
