LOS ANGELES – NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash in California Sunday morning.
Bryant was 41 and his daughter was 13.
The crash happened around 10:00 AM PT in Calabasas, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
It was first reported five people died in the crash.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva later confirmed in a news conference Sunday afternoon there were nine people killed.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer told our sister station KTLA it was a Sikorsky S-76 involved in the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Bryant and his daughter were on their way to a travel basketball game at the Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks when crash occurred.
Bryant won NBA five titles in 20 years with the Los Angeles Lakers. He won an MVP award in 2008.
The Associated Press reported Sunday Grammy Awards pre-telecast ceremony would open with a moment of silence for Kobe Bryant.
