The Jackson, Mississippi public school system said the elementary school currently named after Confederate president Jefferson Davis, Davis IB Elementary, will be renamed next year in honor of former President Barack Obama.
WJTV.com reported the coming change on Wednesday.
Monuments and other emblems that reference the Confederacy have been in the spotlight around the country. Several cities have held protests to have some of the historical monuments removed.
The school’s PTA president, Janelle Jefferson, said, “The school community wanted to rename the campus to reflect a person who fully represents ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves.”
“I wholeheartedly agree with the name,” said school board president Camille Simms.
