A California man was sentenced to 90 days of house arrest after he pleaded no contest to statutory rape of a child.
Lyle Burgess, 79, was sentenced to the house arrest and does not have to register as a sex offender after he pleaded no contest to the charges.
“The girl is not doing good,” family attorney Ken Meleyco tells KTXL of the girl, who is now 7. “She’s showing all the symptoms of somebody who’s been molested. She’s in counseling, and she’s gonna be in counseling all her life.”
Prosecutors didn’t comment on the sentencing, but Meleyco said that Burgess’ financial standing may have helped him avoid harsher consequences.
“He’s obviously very wealthy and it’s just an example of how the wealthy people, time and time again, escape the penalty for what they did,” Meleyco said.
