Pit bull alerts family to fire, tries dragging baby by diaper to safety

A California woman is crediting her dog with saving her and her children’s lives.

Nana Chaichanhda said she was in her backyard when she noticed her 8-month-old pit bull Sasha was behaving strangely.

“I heard like a loud bang and I was like what’s going on, and I heard Sasha crying, and she kept jumping at the door,” Chaichanhda said.  “As soon as I got to the door she runs in, starts barking.”

Chaichanhda realized her cousin’s building engulfed in flames. Chaichanhda rushed to the bedroom to grab her 7-month-old daughter and when she arrived, she found Sasha by the baby’s side.

“She had already had my baby by the diaper and was dragging her off the bed. And I was like ‘Oh my gosh, what are you doing?'”

Someone called 911 and crews responded within minutes, but were unable to save Chaichanhda’s home.

The family will have to start over, but Chaichanhda is counting her blessings and is thankful for her pup’s heroic actions. She hopes their story will change others views of pit bulls as family pets.

“It meant a lot. I owe her everything. If it wasn’t for her, I would have still been in bed and things would could have taken a worse turn,” she said.
