A Smyrna, Tennessee principal made good on a promise he made to his students when he camped out on the roof of the school dressed as Batman.
Thurman Francis Arts Academy principal Jeff McCann told his students he would sleep on the roof of the school in costume if they met their fundraising goal of $50,000.
The theme of this year’s fundraising campaign was “There’s a superhero in all of us” with faculty dressing up as superheroes on kick-off day.
“They raised over $57,000 and Batman is true to his word, so I spent the night on the roof,” said McCann.
The majority of funds were raised over a period of two weeks with a Fun Run where students solicit donations from parents and friends.
McCann credited the community for its support of the school and its fundraising success.
This is McCann’s second school year as principal. Last year, the campaign was a pirate theme with McCann walking a plank into a pool of slime.
So how did McCann enjoy his night on the roof as the Caped Crusader?
“I read some books and actually got a good night’s sleep,” said McCann.
The funds raised will go toward advancing the school’s technology resources and classroom instructional supplies.
McCann went up on the roof around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday came down around 7 a.m. Thursday.
