After Sunday’s homicide at an apartment near 66th and Sherman, residents said it was frightening to watch their neighborhood turn into a crime scene. Many of those residents also told EverythingLubbock.com that they see more crime in the area than they would like.
One eighteen-year-old man, Devon Deshon Holland was killed after he was shot at those apartments.
We spoke with dozens of residents on 66th and 67th streets, none of whom wished to be identified because they were afraid for their safety. Many were afraid early on Monday because the suspect in the murder, eighteen-year-old Quaylon Williams, had yet to be arrested. But Williams turned himself in Monday afternoon, Lubbock Police said.
Lubbock Police were out responding to and investigating the scene of the homicide on Sunday afternoon, many residents noticed the police presence.
“We saw a lot of cops, we saw detectives, we saw a white van and we saw yellow tape,” explained one resident “Sarah.”
“I saw on the news it was a homicide and I knew [the victim] got shot because I always hear gunshots around here. I will be asleep in the middle of the night and hear random gunshots. It’s pretty scary,” said another resident “Molly.”
They say, unfortunately, this is crime is just part of another day in their neighborhood. Even in the daytime, they say they don’t feel safe going outside.
“We even put in an alarm system because it was so scary,” Sarah said.
Molly recalls hearing threats of violence from neighbors fighting near their home. She also said that her family’s car was stolen right out of her driveway.
“It’s scary coming out here, you never know what’s gonna happen next,” Molly said.
She added that her family is looking into moving, especially in light of this recent homicide.
Several other residents echoed those feelings, saying this week’s homicide has them especially worried.
One resident who has lived in the area for four decades said she believes the crime rate has been steadily increasing.
