The new faces of Lubbock City Council were officially introduced to the public.
Dan Pope was sworn in as the Mayor of Lubbock Tuesday evening, and outgoing mayor Glen Robertson was honored by the council.
“I’m going to tell you, you made my job easy,” Robertson said about the former council members in the packed chambers Tuesday night. “Y’all set Lubbock on the right path.
“This council, I cannot say enough about,” Robertson said. “We have came together in the last two years and have solved a lot of tough issues.”
“I look forward to working with our council, with city staff, with the great citizens and taxpayers of this city. With the business community, with the medical community, with higher education, education in general, as we together try to move our community forward,” Pope said.
Steve Massengale replaced Jim Gerlt in District 4. Gerlt was honored by the city on his last day in office.
“I’m flattered and honored to serve on the council for the next four years. I’m humbled,” Massengale said.
“The positive about this is a friend is taking my seat. He was a friend before the election, a friend during the election, a friend after the election,” Gerlt added.
“And now he’s my councilman, or he will be in a few minutes,” Gerlt joked.
Latrelle Joy, who ran unopposed for District 6, thanked her family and supporters for standing by her.
“Thank you all for being here. I appreciate very very much, the support that I’ve had,” she said.
The new members join Karen Gibson and Jeff Griffith on the dias.
Floyd Price announced he would not seek re-election, and Victor Hernandez ran for mayor, giving up his council seat.
The races to replace Price and Hernandez went to a runoff. That election is scheduled for June 25, and the new members will be sworn in in July.
