On Tuesday, August 2, 2016, the New Mexico State Police was contacted to investigate an officer involved shooting incident that occurred in Eunice, NM, involving an Officer from the Eunice Police Department.
The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 4:50 p.m., Eunice police officers responded to the 600 block of South Main Street in reference to a Domestic Violence call.
Upon entering the residence Officer Kevin Gutierrez, a ten-year veteran of Eunice Police Department, encountered forty one year old, Roberto Granados Ocona, who had armed himself with a knife. Subsequently, shots were fired by the officer and Mr. Ocona was stuck.
Mr. Ocona was treated by EMS and transported to Lea Regional Medical Center for treatment. He is currently listed in stable condition.
No Officers were injured in the incident.
The sequence of events leading up to the officer discharging his duty weapon is currently being investigated. No other information is available at this time.
All details of this incident are being investigated by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be referred to an assigned district attorney’s office for review.
