Man Charged with Murder in Curry County Dairy Shooting

UPDATE – June 15 3:22 P.M.:

According to the Curry County Sheriff’s Office, on June 14, Jose Leonidas Flores Espana, 29, who officials previously identified as Leonidas Flores, was arrested and charged with an open count of Murder for the death of Mairon Franco Rodriguez.


Officials said he is also being held as a fugitive from justice for charges pending in California.

Flores Espana was booked into the Curry County Detention Center and is being held without bond. 

ORIGINAL – June 14 7:12 P.M.:

One person is dead following a shooting at a dairy in Curry County.

On June 14, at 1:30 p.m., Curry County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a dairy on New Mexico State Road 77 regarding a person shooting at employees.

When deputies arrived, they said they detained an individual who has tentatively been identified as Leonidas Flores, 29, of Texico.

Curry County officials said Flores was reported by the dairy staff to be the shooter.

Officials said Flores is an employee of the dairy.

Deputies told us a second employee, Mairon Franco Rodriguez, 23, of Texico, was found dead inside the milking barn. They said preliminary information indicates Rodriguez had been shot multiple times.

No other injuries were reported.

The New Mexico State Police are providing assistance, and the investigation is on-going at this time.
