EVENT:
A senior analyst for CNN and staff writer for The New Yorker, Jeffrey Toobin will be the keynote speaker at the 13th Annual Texas Tech University School of Law Scholarship Gala. As an expert on the intersection of politics, media and the law, Toobin will provide a unique look into the inner workings of the U.S. Supreme Court and its influence.
Toobin received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review. After completing law school, Toobin worked as an associate counsel in the office of Independent Counsel Lawrence E. Walsh, an experience that provided the basis for his first book, “Opening Arguments: A Young Lawyer’’s First Case: United States v. Oliver North.” After serving as an assistant United States attorney in Brooklyn, New York, Toobin took up his post as a staff writer for The New Yorker. In 1996, he began covering the country’s highest-profile cases for ABC News, earning him an Emmy Award for his coverage of the Elián González custody saga in 2000. Toobin joined CNN as a legal analyst in 2002 and currently serves as senior analyst for the network.
The gala will honor the Texas Tech Law 2016 Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Service Award winners who have contributed significantly to the legal profession and the Law School. This year’s honorees are Rankin Gasaway (’88), senior vice president, general counsel and secretary for 7-Eleven; Bill Mateja (’86), shareholder at Polsinelli; Chester Grudzinski (’81), partner at Kelly Hart & Hallman; and The Honorable Mackey Hancock (’74), Justice on the Seventh Court of Appeals (retired).
