No. 5 Texas Tech dropped their second round game of the Big 12 Tournament to West Virginia, 9-4, and they move into the loser’s bracket to face Oklahoma on Friday afternoon.
In the sixth inning, the Red Raiders scored two runs to even the ball game at 2-2.
In the top of the sixth, Tech senior outfielder Tyler Neslony knocked a single through the left side to score junior outfielder Anthony Lyons, cutting the deficit to one.
Still in the inning, Tech junior infielder Hunter Hargrove hit a SAC fly to center to score, senior utility player Cory Raley, tying the ball game at 2-2.
In the home half of the frame, WVU added one more to stretch their lead to 3-2.
However, in the top of the seventh, Texas Tech answered after Lyons hit a SAC fly to right field that scored senior catcher Tyler Floyd, evening the game at 3-3.
But the Mountaineers weren’t done. In the bottom of the seventh inning, with the bases loaded, WVU sophomore infielder Kyle Davis hit a triple to right center that cleared the base paths. The Mountaineers controlled a 7-3 lead, and it proved to be the final knock out punch.
WVU tacked on two more runs over the final two frames, while the Red Raiders could only muster up one more run.
Fourth-seeded West Virginia defeated top-seeded Texas Tech 9-4, as the Red Raiders fall to the loser’s bracket.
#1 seed Texas Tech will face #5 seed Oklahoma, Friday at 3:15 p.m. CT at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
