No. 7 Texas Tech allowed Texas to score three runs in the top of the seventh inning, and the Longhorns would hold on to win 7-4 to even the series.
Texas (18-21, 8-6 Big 12) win over the Texas Tech (31-11, 12-2 Big 12) snapped the Red Raiders’ 11-game winning streak in Big 12 play.
In the fourth, Tech junior outfielder Stephen Smith smoked a homerun over the left field wall to give Texas Tech a 4-1 lead. However, it was all downhill from there for the Red Raiders.
In the bottom of the seventh with one runner on for Texas with two outs, Tech senior first baseman Eric Gutierrez grounded a routine chopper from Texas’ junior first baseman Kacy Clemens, but Gutierrez could not beat Clemens to first. The call kept Texas alive in the inning. At that time, Texas Tech controlled a 4-3 lead.
Then Texas’ sophomore outfielder Patrick Mathis looped one into left field and scored two Longhorns runs to give Texas a 5-4 lead. The Horns would add one more in the inning after Texas’ junior outfielder Zane Gurwitz hit a single into right field to score Texas’ sophomore infielder Joe Baker, and give Texas the 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Texas would tack on one more after Gurwitz doubled to right field, scoring Texas’ senior catcher Tres Barerra, giving Texas the 7-4 lead.
No. 7 Texas Tech will face Texas in the series finale, Sunday at 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field.
