As the kiddos head to school and get back into the swing of things, it’s important to make sure they are getting the nutrition they need.
“We want to make sure they’re getting a protein, carbohydrate, also they need some dairy, and fruits and vegetables as well,” recommended Lauren Blechle, a dietitian with Covenant Health.
She says ChooseMyPlate.gov is a great resource.
“They can go through and click the protein, or click a carbohydrate or grain option and then they can see all the different styles.”
She says teaching children now will benefit them in the future.
“As kids grow, we want to make sure we build a healthy lifestyle for them, so teach the ways how to do it,” said Blechle.
She explained as parents, teachers or anyone who is working with children it’s important to set a good example.
Blechle said the food students put in their body at lunch is the energy they need to get through the school day.
“Now, we want to kind of make sure they’re having enough energy throughout the day, so we may want to reduce the amount of sugar in cookies, cakes, anything like that. Replace it with something that’s going to be high in energy, so gets your fruits and vegetables,” she said, “Your fruits will be a little bit sweet, and offer you a nice little treat for the day.”
