An 8-year-old boy was left with welts and a large bruise after an affidavit states that his father beat him with a belt for missing a goal during a soccer game in Odessa.
The incident happened Wednesday in the 2500 block of North Muskingum, according to authorities. Carlos Vasquez, 31, faces an injury to a child charge, which is a felony.
Court documents state the boy’s grandmother contacted police after she says the boy told her that he was beaten with a belt for not scoring during a soccer game. The boy was interviewed at a children’s advocacy center where he reported being hit 5-10 times. Investigators say they observed 5 welts on his buttocks and a large bruise on his thigh.
Detectives also interviewed the boy’s mother who tells police that she thought Vasquez spanked the boy about five times before she intervened and threatened to call authorities. She says Vasquez came after her in a threatening manner when she mentioned calling police, according to officials.
Vasquez admitted to using “excessive” force during the spanking when he was interviewed by detectives. He was arrested and charged with the crime shortly after.
