Atmos Energy said a smell from oil field operations led to many people reporting a smell of natural gas.
A natural gas leak can be dangerous, but in this case Atmos said no leaks have been found in the Atmos system.
Nevertheless, Atmos said to report any suspected natural gas leak by calling 9-1-1 or (888) 286-6700.
An Atmos statement is copied below:
Atmos Energy is receiving high leak call volumes due to an oil field odor that is permeating throughout Lubbock, TX.
“The high southwest winds we are experiencing today, have caused many people in Lubbock to feel they smell natural gas when they actually smell the oil field odor in the air.” Said Marinda Heinrich, Atmos Energy Manager of Public Affairs.
Atmos Energy service technicians have responded to the surging leak orders. No leaks have been found on our system and we can confirm our system is safe.
If you smell natural gas, leave the area immediately, get to a safe location and call 911 or Atmos Energy at (888) 286-6700.
