About 10 miles north of Crosbyton is Blanco Canyon, site of the first settlement in Crosby County.
Terry Kirk is the great-grandson of Hank Smith, the first settler in Crosby County, living in the Rock House, located in Blanco Canyon. Kirk said only one wall still remains of the Rock House.
“This land right here where we’re standing now, I mean, it hasn’t changed,” Kirk said.
“It’s just amazing they settled this area, dug the first well, planted the first orchard, planted the first crops,” his wife, Martha Kirk, said.
The Kirk’s not only live in the canyon, but they also farm and raise cows there as well.
More information about the Smith family and the early settlers in Crosby County can be seen at the Pioneer Memorial Museum in Crosbyton.
