One person is dead and another has been hospitalized following a plane crash in Upshur County.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, a single-engine Cessna 172 carrying two people crashed shortly before midnight under unknown circumstances near Gilmer. The crash is located just west of Highway 271, near Eagle Road, on a ranch.

The FAA had notified Upshur County of a missing plane earlier this evening that had left the airport in Sulphur Springs en route to Gilmer that had not shown up.

FAA investigators are on their way to the crash site and the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation.

The deceased pilot, who also was the registered owner of the plane, has been identified as Samuel Oliver Lucky, 73, of Gladewater. The passenger who was flown to a Tyler hospital and is reported to be in critical condition was identified as Pamela Rickman Lucky, 57, also of Gladewater. Upshur County Justice of the Peace 3 Rhonda Welch was called to the scene and pronounced the pilot deceased. Troopers are holding the scene until the FAA and NTSB arrive on scene.
